Instructional Short Term Programs

Specific Skills

This one-week session for students in grades 1-12 offers training in the instructional areas of daily living skills, orientation and mobility, technology, braille, braille music, careers, and personal development. This program allows students to spend time periodically at NDVS/School for the Blind to enhance skills which will support them academically and socially. Incorporated into the daily schedule is time devoted to personal development and homework, including study and organizational skills. Home and local follow-up is completed by NDVS/School for the Blind itinerant outreach personnel.

Compensatory Skills

This program teaches and reinforces compensatory skills focusing on the unique curricular needs of low vision and blind students in grades 1-12. Time allocated is based on individual needs. Students may be integrated into the local public school program for appropriate subject areas and participation in extracurricular activities. Instructional areas include: daily living skills, orientation and mobility, technology, braille reading and instruction, reading efficiency skills for print readers with low vision, braille music, organizational and study skills, concept development, listening skills, career exploration, personal development, and recreation/leisure.

LEAP

The Life Experiences Advance People (LEAP) Program is available at the NDVS/School for the Blind. The program is designed to help students who are visually impaired or blind develop vision specific skills that will enable them to grow as individuals through experiential learning. The vision specific areas include: daily living skills, orientation and mobility, recreation/leisure, adaptive technology, braille, and vocational skills. The students receive learning experiences in functional settings. Follow-up is provided via a written report and/or an on-site visit to facilitate carry-over of these skills into the home community and school.

Career Week

An intensive week with instruction primarily in job skills, job shadowing, and preparing for life after high school.

Independent Living Program

This is a two-week summer program that promotes independence in daily living skills in an apartment setting. Will experience daily realistic work experience for career planning, and will also participate in planning and participating in leisure activities.

Post Secondary Program

As student approach the time for graduation from high school, they may require additional training in the area of independent living. This program will enable participants to live in an apartment/residential setting while receiving instruction in all aspects of activates of daily living. Students qualify at no cost for this program if they have completed their course requirements but have not received a signed diploma.

Summer Adventure

The NDVS/School for the Blind hosts summer camps for students with visual impairment. The primary goal of this summer camp is to provide visually impaired students with additional experiences relating to skills that are unique to the visually impaired, but that are not included in the academic programs.

The summer months present unique challenges to students and young adults who are visually impaired. Frequently, these students do not have the opportunity to socialize with their visually impaired peers. This camp enables them to get to know other visually impaired students and to share their experiences with them. It also provides them with opportunities in the following areas:
